How to make a good mind map

  1. Put the topic at the center. A map answers one question: what is this about? The central node is that answer, in 2-4 words.
  2. 4 to 6 branches, no more. Each branch is one main idea. If you need ten branches, the topic should be split into two maps.
  3. Keywords, not sentences. A node with more than 5-6 words is a note in disguise: a map is for recalling, not re-reading.
  4. From general to specific. The further from the center, the more specific the concept. If a detail sits on the first level, something is out of place.
  5. Revise by covering the branches. The final test: look only at the center and rebuild the rest out loud. The branches you can't recall are the ones to review.
